OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Nebraska-Omaha hockey coach Dean Blais has fired assistants Troy Jutting and Alex Todd after the Mavericks lost 14 of their last 18 games. The Mavericks started the season ranked Number One in a poll, opened a new building in Baxter Arena and got off to a 14-3-1 start. But the Mavs went 4-14, losing eight straight to finish and getting swept by Denver in the National Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. Blais said in a statement he decided the move was necessary for the program to improve and stay competitive in the NCHC. Jutting was an assistant for four years following 12 years as head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato. Todd joined the staff prior to the 2013 to 2014 season after eight years as the head coach at Division Three Castleton State in Vermont.
