KEARNEY – Nebraska-Kearney senior Connor Beranek has been named a third-team All-American by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.
The 6-6 forward from Ravenna is the 11th men’s basketball All-American in school history and the fifth at the Division II level.
The D2 CCA squad is voted upon by sports information directors from around the country. To be on the national ballot, a student-athlete must be named first-team all-region.
Beranek is one of 20 players to make the squad and joined by Missouri Southern State’s Taevaunn Prince (1st-team) and NW Missouri State’s Justin Pitts (honorable mention).
In helping UNK go 21-12 (14-8 MIAA) and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament this year, Beranek averaged 25.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 blocks per game.
Among the national scoring leaders, he set new UNK records for free throws made (251) and attempted (291) in a single season with his percentage of 86.3 also setting a new Loper standard.
Next, Beranek’s point total of 831 and scoring average are the second highest in Loper lore with his three-year point total of 1,870 ranking seventh in school history, just behind Tom Kropp (1,884).
UNK’s other D2 All-Americans are forwards Dusty Jura (2006 & 2007), Nick Branting (2004), Nick Svehla (2002 & 2003) and Eric Strand (1998 & 1999).
Ryan Stephan of Colorado Mesa, a 6-10, 250 pound senior center, was named the Ron Lenz Player of the Year. He averaged 25.6 points and 11.4 rebounds per game for the Mavericks. The team also included Augustana’s Daniel Jansen and Casey Schilling.
Finally, 15 of the All-Americans were seniors.
Later in March, the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) will release their All-District and All-American teams for Division II.
