LINCOLN – For the second year in a row, the Sandhills/Thedford girls saw themselves playing for third place in the Class D2 state basketball tournament Saturday morning, March 5 at North Star High School. The Knights met Falls City Sacred Heart, who began the tournament as the #1 seed but were upset by Wynot on Friday.
The game was tied at 13-13 after the first quarter, and a buzzer-beating layup at the end of the second quarter gave the Irish a slim 26-25 advantage heading into halftime.
Falls City Sacred Heart owned the second half, outscoring the Knights 29-11. The Irish went on to defeat Sandhills/Thedford 55-36, claiming third place. The Knights bring home a fourth-place trophy for the second year in a row.
Avery Taylor was the lone player in double digits for the Knights, scoring 13 points. Rebecca Higgins scored nine points in the first half, including a pair of three pointers. The two three pointers gave her a tournament total of 10, breaking the previous record 8. That marks the second new record set by Higgins at this year’s tournament.
Sandhills/Thedford ends their season at 23-6 overall, and as the fourth-place team in Class D2.
