NORTH PLATTE – It was a roller coaster of a game when Anselmo-Merna and Mullen met for the boys D2-5 District basketball championship at North Platte High Tuesday night, March 1.
The Coyotes had the hot hand early, leading 24-9 after the first quarter, and 36-24 at halftime. But Mullen slowly chipped away, and after the third quarter, Anselmo-Merna’s lead had been reduced to seven points at 40-33.
The Broncos battled back and eventually took a 45-41 lead in the fourth, thanks in part to a 12-2 scoring run. The Coyotes were able to tie the score by making free throws, and the teams would exchange leads for a short period of time, before Anselmo-Merna was able to put the game away from the charity stripe.
The Coyotes made 15 free throws in the fourth quarter, helping them claim the 57-51 victory over Mullen, and the D2-5 District championship.
Troy Gilligan had 15 points to lead Anselmo-Merna, and Collin Safranek added 12. Samuel Vinton had 18 points for Mullen and Emmet Storer scored 14. Mullen ends their season at 21-4 overall, while Anselmo-Merna improves to 20-5.
The Coyotes are the #5 seed in the D2 state tournament, and will face Parkview Christian in the first round on Thursday, March 10 at Lincoln Northeast at 10:45 am.
