Riley, Eichorst and Company Make Stop in Grand Island for Husker Tour (AUDIO)
AUDIO: Nebraska head football coach Mike Riley comments on the current recruiting process.
GRAND ISLAND - Nebraska Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst and head football coach Mike Riley were in Grand Island on Tuesday evening, May 9 as part of their week long Husker Tour across the state.
Joining Eichorst and Riley on Tuesday were defensive line coach John Parella, former quarterback Steve Taylor, head women's basketball coach Amy Williams and voice of the Huskers Greg Sharpe.
KBEAR had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with coach Riley on a number of topics, including recruiting.
"We've looked at it hard all off season, and then put together a plan about how we're going to approach kind of the one, two, three phases of the spring recruiting cycle," Riley said. "The first thing we wanted to do was hit Nebraska, and we called it the swarm. I think we visited 40, 45 high schools, somewhere in there, and that was good. And then we had our coaches go to the big cities in our kind of radius of 500 miles. So we just moved out a little bit from Nebraska, moved out into the 500 mile radius, and then we went nation wide, so that's where our coaches are now."
Riley noted his optimism for the current recruiting class.
"I'm really, really on edge about recruiting right now. We have some momentum, I feel like there's a movement out there and it's real," Riley said. "This is a great place and we've got some exciting commitments that are kind of leading the charge for us, actually. Great examples of this thing galvanizing from guys that are jumping on board, so we're gonna ride that wave and push hard and get the best class that we can into this school."
Nebraska currently has eight commits to its 2018 recruiting class, which is rated #8 in the nation by 247 Sports.
Remaining stops on the Husker Tour this week include Omaha on Wednesday; Fremont and Elkhorn on Thursday and Nebraska City on Friday. Tickets are available at various locations.
