Ribbon Cut on New CEDC/NIFA Homes in Broken Bow (AUDIO)

AUDIO: Joel Janecek talks with CEDC Executive Director Deb McCaslin about the new workforce housing home in Broken Bow.

BROKEN BOW - The ribbon was cut on Friday, June 9 for two new houses in Broken Bow.

The homes were part of a workforce housing joint effort between the Custer Economic Development Corporation and the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority.

Deb McCaslin, Executive Director for the CEDC, says the workforce housing project is vital to the community of Broken Bow.

"It's huge, because if you look at, on our trend study, four years ago 65 percent of those individuals who were employed in the community of Broken Bow lived out of county. Through the housing options we've added over the last four years, through Legacy Apartments, Keely Estates, Indian Hills and now these, we've got the average down to about 38 percent. But they still live out of county, and we've got so many job openings," McCaslin said. "But you hire those that you can't house. We need housing on all levels. We need small apartments and big apartments and small houses and big houses. And this road, what we call workforce housing, is just great."

The houses, located at 706 and 744 Pawnee Lane, offer 1,300 square feet of finished living space, three bedrooms and two baths, full unfinished basement, extended two car garage, e-rated appliances and underground sprinklers, among other furnishings.

McCaslin said the two homes are the first step in an ongoing process.

"Our long term vision is to build 10 more of these and a duplex. And we have other lots," McCaslin said. "We'll really only have three underway at a time, but if somebody likes a lot and would like to purchase that house at that lot, we will absolutely sell the lot and sell the house immediately."
